Thought for the Week

This is where I post a small snippet of an article, either a question or a fact which can be discussed.

In a recent article published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society it was quoted that urbanisation in the UK was having an impact on pollinators within urban landscapes.

They found that urban landscapes supported 43% fewer pollinator species, with even bigger declines the further to the centre of the city you go.

They found for every 10% increase in impervious surfaces – such as roads and building cover – there was a reduction of up to 7.5% in the variety of pollinating species.

Hoverflies took an even greater hit compared with bees, could this be this due to them having more complex life cycles?

Can we do more for our urban wildlife in particular pollinators, especially hoverflies?

Can we reverse this trend by encouraging more pollinators into our urban environments?
