Tale of Two Gardens
Stairfoot Garden 15th Sept – around 4pm
It's been a bit of a mixed weather week, a little wet & windy although still quite warm. The flora in my garden is now a little sparse, but it was nice to have the Great Pied Volucella pellucens drop in to visit the still flowering buddelia, this was the first sighting for the year in the garden.
Hoverflies Logged:
Great Pied (Volucella pellucens), Common Banded (Syrphus ribesii)After a quite a few months of the birds being quiet, it is nice to hear the robin singing again early morning and the other birds starting to visit the garden more regularly, below is a summarised list of sightings.
1
1st Yr Willow Warbler Phyllooscopus trochilus came in with the tits and was being overly aggressive towards them, Long-tailed Tit family Aegithalos caudatus, Wren Troglodytes troglodytes, Coal Tit pair Parus ater, Treecreeper Certhia famillaris along with other regulars Dunnock Prunella modularis, Robin Erithcus rubecula, Blue Tit Parus caerulrus, Great Tit Parus major & Blackbird ♂+♀Turdus merula and a Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus youngster (lacking the white neck patch). We looked after the youngster whilst its mum was away, as we were frightened next doors cat might get it, as it was unable to fly.
♂+♀Tawny Owl Strix aluco called later that evening and the ♂ Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus, which has been visiting regularly since 27th August after a two-year absence. Let's hope we can fatten it up for its upcoming hibernation.
Sheffield Garden 19th September 11- 4pm
A better day weatherwise as seen by a bigger list of hoverflies.

What was interesting is I did not see a single Marmalade (Episyprhus balteatus) all day.

Star species:
Yellow-barred Peat (Sericomyia silentis) a new one for me according to my records, and not a species I would expect to see in the garden as this hoverfly is typically associated with upland environments. It was observed feeding on the red valerian (Valeriana rubra).
Other
notable species:
5 Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Dock Bug (Coreus magiatus),
Green Shield Bug (Pulonena prasina), & 22 Spot Ladybird (Psyllobora
22-punctata)
