Hoverflies at the Winter Olympics

Now for something completely different.....

While hoverflies (Syrphidae) are not Olympic athletes, their specialised, agile flight—including hovering, backward flight, and rapid darting—makes them uniquely suited to mimic the mechanics of certain 2026 Winter Olympic disciplines.

I think hoverflies would excel in aerial events where precision and vertical movement are key.

Here are my top 3 suggestions, let me know below if you agree.

Aerials/Freestyle Skiing (Big Air): Hoverflies possess incredible aerial stability and precision, mimicking the acrobatic, twisting, and controlled flight required in aerials. Loved watching the men’s and women's ‘Big Air’ event.

Ski Jumping: Their ability to manage lift and drag during flight allows them to "hover" and glide, much like a ski jumper maximising airtime.

Just like Eddie the Eagle Edwards.

Anyone seen that film?

Or old enough to remember the actual event.

If so comment below.

Figure Skating: Their ability to rapidly pivot and change direction in mid-air mimics the rotational speed and precision required in spinning.

Good luck to the British pair bring us back a medal.

Loving the competition so far, congratulations to the Italian hosts for putting on a spectacular event.

Good luck to all competitors over the next few weeks.
